Oscar Nominations 2020 and how did I do

the-irishman-movie

BEST PICTURE

  • Parasite
  • The Irishman
  • Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
  • Marriage Story
  • 1917
  • Jojo Rabbit
  • Little Women
  • Joker
  • Ford v Ferrari

This one I nailed! All nine out of nine correct.

BEST DIRECTOR

  • Parasite – Bon Joon Ho
  • The Irishman – Martin Scorsese
  • 1917 – Sam Mendes
  • Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood – Quentin Tarantino
  • Joker – Todd Phillips

4/5. I was, again, too optimistic and predicted a woman to be one of the five. But no, Phillips got in instead of Greta Gerwig (Little Women).

BEST LEAD ACTOR

  • Marriage Story – Adam Driver
  • Joker – Joaquin Phoenix
  • Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood – Leonardo DiCaprio
  • Pain & Glory – Antonio Banderas
  • The Two Popes – Jonathan Pryce

4/5. I have to remember not to underestimate the old, white dude. Jonathan Pryce won over Taron Egerton (which kinda makes me sad, as Egerton is brialliant as Elton John in Rocketman, much better than Rami Malek was as Freddie Mercury last year in Bohemian Rhapsody and he did win the Oscar. Blah.)

BEST LEAD ACTRESS

  • Marriage Story – Scarlett Johansson
  • Judy – Renee Zellweger
  • Harriet – Cynthia Erivo
  • Bombshell – Charlize Theron
  • Little Women – Saoirse Ronan

4/5. Bet the wrong horse, Cynthia Erivo beat Awkwafina (The Farewell).

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

  • Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood – Brad Pitt
  • The Irishman – Joe Pesci
  • The Irishman – Al Pacino
  • A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood – Tom Hanks
  • The Two Popes – Anthony Hopkins

4/5. Don’t underestimate old, white dudes. Hopkins over Song (Parasite).

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

  • Marriage Story – Laura Dern
  • Bombshell – Margot Robbie
  • Little Women – Florence Pugh
  • Richard Jewell – Kathy Bates
  • Jojo Rabbit – Scarlett Johansson

3/5. Poor Jennifer Lopez, probably the biggest snub of them all. Kathy Bates got in. And I really didn’t believe that they would nominate Scarlett Johansson twice. But cool that they did, she deserves it. Sad though that left Zhao Shuzhen of The Farewell out.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

  • Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
  • Marriage Story
  • Parasite
  • Knives Out
  • 1917

4/5. The Farewell didn’t get any love, it was left out here too when 1917 got in.

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

  • The Irishman
  • Little Women
  • Jojo Rabbit
  • Joker
  • The Two Popes

5/5.

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

  • 1917
  • Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
  • The Irishman
  • Joker
  • The Lighthouse

5/5.

BEST EDITING

  • Ford v Ferrari
  • The Irishman
  • Joker
  • Parasite
  • Jojo Rabbit

3/5. Bad. Usually I nail this category and it’s still weird for me that OUATIH didn’t make the cut. But I’m happy that Jojo Rabbit did. Joker went in and 1917 was left out (should’ve known that if it really looks like one take).

BEST COSTUME DESIGN

  • Little Women
  • Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
  • Jojo Rabbit
  • The Irishman
  • Joker

2/5. This is always hard category for me to predict. And so it seems it was this year too. I had Downton Abbey, Rocketman and Dolemite Is My Name instead of Jojo, Irishman and Joker. The last one I don’t really get, but then again, I’m not a designer.

BEST MAKEUP & HAIRSTYLING

  • Bombshell
  • 1917
  • Joker
  • Judy
  • Maleficent: the Mistress of Evil

3/5. Another hard one. Dolemite didn’t get any love and Rocketman was also excluded. Maleficent 2 and 1917 were chosen instead.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

  • Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
  • 1917
  • Parasite
  • The Irishman
  • Jojo Rabbit

4/5. Jojo won over Little Women.

BEST SCORE

  • Joker
  • 1917
  • Little Women
  • Marriage Story
  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

5/5. John Williams, of course.

Frozen_II_-_Elsa_Into_the_Unknown

BEST SONG

  • Rocketman – (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again
  • Toy Story 4 – I Can’t Let You Throw Yourself Away
  • Frozen 2 – Into the Unknown
  • Harriet – Stand Up
  • Breakthrough – I’m Standing With You

3/5. Don’t underestimate Diane Warren or animations. Breakthrough and Toy Story 4 in, Wild Rose and The Lion King out. The latter surprises me, I would have thought them to want Beyonce on board.

BEST SOUND MIXING

  • Ford v Ferrari
  • Joker
  • 1917
  • Ad Astra
  • Once Upon A Time… in Hollywood

2/5. Ugh. But I was lost with sound categories this year, I knew it. Blockbusters out (End Game, Star Wars, Rocketman) and Joker (well, it’s a blockbuster too), Hollywood (this too… 😀 ) and Ad Astra in. Should’ve known, they all have beautiful sound work.

BEST SOUND EDITING

  • Ford v Ferrari
  • Joker
  • 1917
  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
  • Once Upon A Time… in Hollywood

3/5. Same as the above except lightsabers made the cut.

avengers-endgame-1200x520

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

  • Avengers: Endgame
  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker
  • 1917
  • The Irishman
  • The Lion King

4/5. I bet Alita instead of The Lion King and I lost.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

  • Toy Story 4
  • Missing Link
  • Klaus
  • I Lost My Body
  • How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

4/5. I really didn’t see it coming that Klaus would overshadow the biggest animation of all times, Frozen 2.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

  • The Cave
  • American Factory
  • Honeyland
  • For Sama
  • The Edge of Democracy

3/5. Another surprise, I thought Apollo 11 was shoo-in. But The Edge of Democracy had the edge. And The Cave was my sixth option but I bet on One Child Nation.

Pain-and-Glory-Antonio-Banderas-1100x520

BEST INTERNATIONAL FILM

  • Parasite (South Korea)
  • Pain & Glory (Spain)
  • Les Misérables (France)
  • Corpus Christi (Poland)
  • Honeyland (North Macedonia)

4/5. Not bad, this is often hard to predict. Atlantics (Senegal) lost to another European flick (Corpus Christi).

BEST ANIMATED SHORT

  • Kitbull
  • Sister
  • Memorable
  • Hair Love
  • Dcera

3/5. I didn’t properly prepare myself for predicting short film categories this year and tha can be seen. Dcera and Memorable in instead of Physics of Sorrow and Hors Piste.

BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT

  • Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone
  • St. Louis Superman
  • In the Absense
  • Life Overtakes Me
  • Walk Run Cha Cha

2/5. I had Fire in Paradise, Stay Close and The Nightcrawlers. The Academy chose those  three last ones above.

BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT

  • Nefta Football Club
  • Brotherhood
  • Saria
  • The Neighbor’s Window
  • A Sister

3/5. I had Little Hands and Miller and Son instead of Window and A Sister.
